Marrakech was founded in 1062 by Youssef bin Tachfine of the Almoravid dynasty. His son perfected the city by bringing in architects and craftsmen from Cordoba to build palaces, baths, mosques and a subterranean water system. The city walls were raised from the red mud of the plains, with the snow-covered peaks of the High Atlas Mountains forming a backdrop for the city. Marrakech is not only a fantastic city, it is also a symbol of the Morocco that once was, and which still survives here. In the center of Marrakech is a square, Djemaa el fna, which is the operating point for entertainers such as acrobats, drummers, dancers, pipe musicians, comedians and storytellers. The city is known by the Koutoubia mosque, which is visible from practically anywhere in Marrakech.

Marrakech has mild winters, hot summers and perfects springs and winters...and the sky is usually clear and blue. Because of its geographic location and touristic reputation, Marrakech has excellent airline connections to the entire country. Its international airport also offers connections to Europe, South and North America. Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is situated four miles (6 km) southwest of Marrakech.
